Abstract
This review of Sheher Mein Gaon: Culture, Conflict and Change in the Urban Villages of Delhi uses the Master Plan for Delhi 2021 and the National Capital Territory of Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Act (hereafter ‘Special Provisions Act’) to argue that the conditions described in the book are a direct result from the whole-scale exemption provided to Delhi's urban villages from urban planning frameworks. The reviewer finds that Ekta Chauhan’s new book provides a valuable addition to the existing body of work on Delhi, especially the urban village, which is under-represented in this corpus. The book manages to highlight the contradictions and conflicts, particularly gender, caste and migrant/local identity, that play out in urban villages, which have been undergoing rapid transformations since the turn of the new millennium.
