Sustaining Our Planet’s Water Resources

Water Management in Asia Pacific: A Comparative Study from Ganges Basin and Mekong Basin

Abstract

Water crises have been a growing issue in the Asia-Pacific region due to factors including population growth, developmental activities and climate. Water scarcity is both natural and constructed with interventions from social, political and economic elements, causing several local and regional challenges including concerns of water conflicts among various uses and users, calling for an equitable management of water resources in the region. The paper explores the need for effective water management in the Asia-Pacific region, one of the water-rich areas vulnerable to water scarcity. The paper explores the Mekong and Ganga basin regions to examine the challenges faced in managing water resources in an equitable manner. It explores current water management treaties and practices and the impact they create in the region in the light of increasing impacts of climate change. The research draws insights from the secondary literature to reflect on water conservation to promote environmental justice. The study contends that there is a need to revisit the existing water management laws in the Asia-Pacific region to ensure equity and justice.
