Abstract
In the forty year history of the working of the Indian Constitution, the nation's highest judicial organ, the Supreme Court has been called upon to interpret provisions of the grundnormn and resolve problems that seem to be constantly arising in this sphere of law. One such contentious area is that of Centre-State Relations, particularly dissolution of State Legislative Assemblies. The attention of the judiciary towards the issue was first seen in a few high court decisions prior to 1977.' But the impending dissolution of State Legislative Assemblies that year brought the matter to the Supreme Court in The Rajasthan Case. This was the law of the land till 1992 when in the aftermath of the Babri Masjid demolition, BJP ruled states had their governments removed under Article 356. The Supreme transferred some cases and clubbed appeals and rendered a common judgment
